Step 1.Review Requirements

Step 2.Contact a Police Academy

Below are the closest options to the City, however, there is an extensive list on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement site.

Out-of-State Certified officers may be eligible for an exemption from the full basic recruit training if you meet the following requirements:

  • You worked at least one year, full-time (40 hours per week) as a sworn officer in the discipline you are seeking exemption, and
  • You received training in that discipline which is comparable to Florida's full basic recruit curriculum, or
  • You were previously certified in Florida but have a four-year break in service.

Step 3.Fill out an application

Once you complete the Police Academy application and background process, and are approved to start an academy class, you may apply for a Police Officer position with us. Positions vary every week, so check back often!

Already a Florida-certified officer?

Florida-certified officers need to:

  • Complete the initial city application.
  • Participate in an oral board.
  • Complete the personal history questionnaire.
  • Participate in a polygraph examination.
  • Complete the physical agility test.
  • Complete the National Police Officer Test (POST).
  • Once presented with a conditional offer, complete a psychological and medical examination.

Retired military, veterans and the National Guard

The PSLPD is actively seeking active or retired military, veterans, and members of The National Guard to serve as police officers. As part of Port St. Lucie's continuing commitment to our veterans, we are working to connect veterans with available services and programs. If you are retiring from active duty military or you were military police, you may be eligible for the Equivalency of Training. EOT is a modified police academy that focuses on Florida law and high liability, which can be completed in one to two weeks.

Additionally, the Port St. Lucie Police Department is an approved on-the-job-training facility. This means that upon being hired, you may be eligible to utilize your GI Bill benefits to fund the police academy and supplement the first year of service.

Other benefits for retired military, veterans and members of the National Guard include:

  • Compensation & select benefits while in the police academy.
  • Paid military leave up to 240 hours.
  • Eligible to buy back up to 10 years of LEO or full-time military service.

Minimum Requirements

The minimum qualifications to be considered for a police officer position are:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be at least 19 years old.
  • Must have a high-school diploma or equivalent, although a college degree is preferred.
  • Must have a good work history.
  • No dishonorable discharge from any branch of the military.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for at least a year and a good driving record.
  • Must be in good physical condition and of good moral character.
  • Vision must be correctable to 20/40 in each eye.
  • Must have no felony convictions or misdemeanors involving moral character, false statements or domestic violence. No pending criminal charges.
  • Must pass a written exam, physical assessment test, panel interview, multiple polygraph exams, background investigation, medical screening and a psychological exam.
